Tracing Benjang Batok, Art From Pangandaran

Besides being famous for marine tourism, Pangandaran Regency, West Java also keeps a variety of cultures, local wisdom, and other traditional arts. One of them is the Benjang Batok art. Benjang batok is the buhun art of the Pangandaran community. Coming from Karangpaci Hamlet, Kertayasa Village, Cijulang District. About 1.5 km from the Green Canyon destination.

The name of this art is taken from the traditional musical instrument used in the form of a coconut shell or shell. It is played by hitting two shells rhythmically, to produce a distinctive tone. In this buhun art, the tools used are made of coconut shell or shell shaped like a bowl. Visually, this art is a collaboration with angklung art and the rhythms of Sundanese gamelan music, such as drums, gongs, and others. Showing a number of dancers holding two shells and then being beaten rhythmically while waddling and dancing to the rhythm.

The song that was sung was also the theme of Sundanese satire. The art of benjang shell is often performed at a welcoming ceremony for guests attending traditional ceremonies or certain events. Now, this traditional art has been developed by one of the Sundanese art studios in Pangandaran, namely “Saung Angklung Mang Koko”. This art studio, which is synonymous with angklung, was founded in 2008 by Koko Komarudin alias Mang Koko, an art figure in Pangandaran Regency.

In addition to the angklung and benjang batok arts, Saung Angklung Mang Koko also has other traditional arts, such as the art of the flute harp, the art of ronggeng gunung, celempungan, calung, traditional karasemen processions, and badud art. They also produce angklung for souvenirs in various sizes. His phenomenal work is in the form of a giant angklung measuring 6 x 2 meters which is the hallmark of the art studio.

This Benjang batok art is a remnant of the struggle when defending the homeland and nation during the Japanese colonial era. According to the story, the way Benjang Batok fought the Japanese invaders was only by tricking the invaders with a group of women.

At the time of forced labor or Romusa. To avoid forced labor which caused many victims, women in the Karangpaci area gathered to form the Benjang batok group.

One of them was the mothers at that time tricking the invaders with the accompaniment of the benjang batok which is a dance movement by hitting the shell. So that the colonizers are happy with the entertainment and continue to make them forget, which in the end, can make the invaders forget everything, including Romusa’s intentions in the area.
